This breed emerged from North China, its origin dates back to several thousand years (it is estimated that it began to be bred approximately 2,000 or 3,000 years ago), this makes the Chow Chow one of the oldest dogs in the world.

Since its inception it has been used for many tasks (hunters, sled shooters, livestock keepers, etc). At the end of the 19th century the Chow Chow was introduced in the West, where it was not very successful at first, it was exhibited at the London Zoo as a “Chinese wild dog”. It was only when Queen Victoria adopted a Chow Chow that her fame exploded in the UK. The success did not stop and it was officially exhibited in the year 1890 and then it was admitted to the American Kennel Club in 1903. It was chosen by this club as one of the ten best breeds.

Chow Chows are intelligent, haughty and independent, they are not usually sociable and outgoing dogs. Generally distant with strangers and aggressive with other dogs. They need a firm owner, sure of himself, who inspires him with authority and respect. They are very sensitive to reprimand, which should be done tactfully.

Its body is robust, its skull wide and its ears small. Their eyes are small, almond-shaped, and their colors range from brown to black.

Elbow dysplasia:

Hip dysplasia:
